What's in a Name
The name "Sailor Yuggoth" came from my short story The Angry Astronaut Affair In that story, "Sailor Yuggoth" was Steffi Roderick's handle on the Lovecraft Country MMORPG where the central issues of the story first started. I wanted to create a sense of a world where Lovecraft's themes had so completely worked themselves into nerdy culture that it was completely believable that someone would write a Sailor Moon-Lovecraft Mythos crossover fanfic, in which Lovecraft's fictional planet of Yuggoth would have its own Sailor Senshi.
However, it wasn't the first time that Lovecraft's fictional planet of Yuggoth had played a surprising role in my imagination. At around that time, I had a dream in which I was doing an astrology chart for the late Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, and it included Yuggoth as one of the planets, distinct from Pluto. From the way the chart was laid out, it appeared that Yuggoth was supposed to be a large planet at the outer edge of the Kuiper Belt, perhaps even into or beyond the Oort Cloud. Perhaps it was the hypothetical additional gas giant that was ejected from the Outer Solar System in the early part of its history, or a failed star, or even a wandering planet that had been captured by the Sun.
So it seemed logical to imagine that, in a world in which Yuggoth was an actual world known to astronomers, it would have its influences upon astrology as well. And thus it seemed perfect to use the name "Sailor Yuggoth" for a website dedicated to my writings in the Lovecraft tradition.
